4 Steven Adams (basketball)
$2.8m

Steven Adams was made an instant millionaire last year when he was picked up by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 12th round of the NBA draft.

The 21-year-old had a listed salary of $2.6 million for his first season, which will increase to $2.7 million next year for the second of his guaranteed seasons. Having drawn a cult following among basketball fans for his beast-like presence on the court and humble nature off it, endorsements are surely coming the young Kiwi’s way.

He was back in New Zealand last month courtesy of Powerade, who have enlisted the NBA star to help mentor talented young athletes in their Breakthrough Academy. It is understood Adams has further promotional work lined up with Powerade late this year.

Well looked after in the Thunder system, which provides Adams with a car, accommodation and meals, the Rotorua basketballer hasn’t needed to splash out too much. He proudly tweeted a picture of vintage Fender guitars, which can be worth anywhere between $25,000 and $80,000. Adams told the Herald last month he has always loved guitars.
